I reached the same conclusion earlier today as I was researching options for a client. I was surprised how few niche social networking sites I could find--even for topics that would attract a lot of conversation. When there is a dearth of virtual "coffee shops" for special interest groups to meet, the conversation is scattered over a large number of blogs (connected by bookmarking sites) rather than easily accessible in a central location.
