For instance, you're not following me (@swombat - hint hint!), but I'm interested in your occasional tweets, so I wouldn't want to unfollow you. On the other hand, if I had some random person who, as far as I know, has done nothing of interest, but I followed back out of courtesy, but who since unfollowed me - then I would want to unfollow that person. At the moment I deal with that by trawling my "following" list ever month or two and removing people who aren't following me back and who I don't remember.
