Great article about Elance - and quite informative also. I personally have used Elance web designers A TON over the years and I truly believe that there are some great designers on Elance. After all, Elance is the leading marketplace for online talent online - hands down.

The only suggestion I would ask is to use the private message board to interview candidates and carefully scrutinize feedback and samples. Also, use a written contract for all transaction so there are is no confusion about deliverables, expectations and payment requirements. Also, use milestone features and fund project accordingly.

I think rentacoder.com is another viable alternative, if you can bear with the poor site design. The main differences compared to elance (not including the design) are:
a.) They do not charge the service providers a fixed fee, but only take 15 % commission on the final bid amount. I have found that the average bid on my project on has been lower on rentacoder by a large margin which may be explained by this.
b.) Rentacoder has an arbitration system, which appears to be quite effective. I'm not sure how this compares to elance's system.
c.) The last thing I've found was that my projects tended to attract large outsourcing companies on elance, but smaller freelancers on RAC

There are other avenues you can follow when outsourcing projects. Another great one is Freelancewar.com. It is free, unlike elance and others, and it is starting to really grow. Very limited projects, because the site is still very new, but lots of eager freelancers looking for work. http://www.freelancewar.com

I think the last tip is the best, never just pick someone because you can't find what you really want, even if you have to search multiple places, it's worth it to find the company that can really provide you with what you need. I've never tried any of these tools, but I'm going to have to check them out, thanks for the post!

Hi there,
Looks like you've learned quite a bit about outsourcing. You may want to check out oDesk. An online marketplace with over 26,000 tested and rated providers, oDesk offers many of the features and benefits that other marketplace sites offer, but it also offers several unique advantages, which I’ve listed below:
 1. No membership fees, ever.
 2. No time sheets or bookkeeping. Hours are automatically logged through our oDesk Team software. (We offer a fixed bid option as well, but encourage users to go with hourly because of this added security.)
 3. Flexibility. Did you or the designer come up with a bunch of new ideas that will take longer than you expected? No problem—oDesk allows you to calculate in this flexibility.
 5. Tools. Our free tools make it easy to collaborate with your freelancer and all your team members, track tasks through Bugzilla, and remember every change ever made to your files with our SVN source code repository.
If you want to check out more, check out the website: http://www.odesk.com
