I personally have used Elance web designers A TON over the years and I truly believe that there are some great designers on Elance. After all, Elance is the leading marketplace for online talent online - hands down. The only suggestion I would ask is to use the private message board to interview candidates and carefully scrutinize feedback and samples. Also, use a written contract for all transaction so there are is no confusion about deliverables, expectations and payment requirements. Also, use milestone features and fund project accordingly. The main differences compared to elance (not including the design) are: a.) They do not charge the service providers a fixed fee, but only take 15 % commission on the final bid amount. I have found that the average bid on my project on has been lower on rentacoder by a large margin which may be explained by this. b.) Rentacoder has an arbitration system, which appears to be quite effective. I'm not sure how this compares to elance's system. c.)
